ABOUT THE POSSUM

NZ Possum information.

The Australian Bush Tailed Possum (Trichosurus vulpecula) was introduced into Southland, New Zealand,  in 1858 with the aim of creating a fur industry.

The Possum has flourished so well that it has become a major pest, devastating our native forests and destroying habitats and food sources.

While Possums are primarily vegetarian -  they particularly enjoy dining on Rata, Native Mistletoe and Pohutakawa.
They also prey on eggs and chicks of native birds like Kiwi and Keruru.

It is hard to believe, but they were actually a protected species until 1947. They are now widespread throughout the country, including Stewart Island and the Chathams.

We are doing our part to control this pest by creating products that can be used by people around the world.

All our pelts come from the wild. Possums are not farmed

The NZ Possum is not related to the American Oppossum
